Tangier

Near the Grand Socco

It was here that Paul Bowles lived and wrote, as well as William Burroughs, who wrote in Naked Lunch about the "Interzone," referring
to Tangier, which was an international zone governed until 1956 by a group of European powers called the Board of Control.

Meknès

Courtyard in the Mausoleum of Sultan Moulay Ismail

Sultan Moulay Ismail (reigned 1672-1727) made Meknès his capital.

Faience

Intricate stucco and zellij tiles are used to decorate the lower strip of the inner walls.

Volubilis

Mosaics

Volubilis dates largely from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, and was one of the Roman Empire's most remote outposts.

Fès

Bab Bou Jeloud

Added in 1913, Bab Bou Jeloud is the main entrance to the old town, Fès el-Bali, which contains more than nine thousand streets and lanes.

Bottom right, in the distance, is the minaret of the Medersa Bou Inania, built by the Merenid sultan Bou Inan
between 1350 and 1357; it is one of the finest theological colleges built by the Merenids.

Kairaouine Mosque

The mosque was built between 859 and 862 by Fatma bint Mohammed be Feheri for her fellow
refugees from Tunisia.  The buildings contain one of the finest libraries in the Muslim world.

Marrakesh

City View

View of the city from the Koutoubia Minaret.  Marrakesh was founded in 1062 AD by the Almoravid sultan Youssef bin Tachfin.

Pits used for dyeing and tanning.

Jardin Majorelle

Now owned by Yves Saint-Laurent, the gardens and villa were laid out by the French painter Jacques Majorelle, who lived there from 1922 to 1962.

Essaouira (Mogador)

City Wall

The Portuguese established a commercial and military bridgehead in Essaouira towards the end of the 15th century.

Ramparts

Most of what stands today is the result of Sultan Sidi Mohammed bin Abdallah
hiring a French architect, Théodore Cornut, in 1765 to design a city suitable for traders.
