The Grand Palace

The Grand Palace was begun by King Rama I in 1782.  On the left is Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

The Reclining Buddha at Wat Po

This 46-meter long and 15-meter high image is entirely covered with gold leaf.  The soles of the feet, 5.5 meters high,
are inlaid with mother-of-pearl designs depicting 108 laksanas or auspicious signs by which a Buddha may be recognized.

There may be as many as twenty different hill tribes in Thailand, with an estimated total
population of 550,000.  Of these, 38,000 are Akha who have their origin in Tibet.
